The Fifty Miracle Principles of A Course in Miracles

Principle 23

Miracles rearrange perception and place all levels in true perspective.
This is healing because sickness comes from confusing the levels.

The levels that are being confused are the levels of the mind and the body. The ego takes the problem of guilt in our minds, which is the true sickness, and it says it is not the mind that is sick, it is the body that is sick. It shifts from the level of the mind back to the level of the body. The miracle takes it right back to where it started and says it is not the body that is sick, it is the mind that is sick.

That is all the miracle does. It brings the problem back to where it is. Again, it restores to cause (the mind) the function of causation. The Course is very, very emphatic on that. There is nothing whatsoever that is sick with the body. The body does nothing at all. It is totally neutral. There is a workbook lesson that says, "My body is a wholly neutral thing" (workbook, p. 436; W-pll.294). The body merely carries out the dictates of the mind. As I said just before, the body cannot be healed because the body has never been sick. It is the mind that is sick and, therefore, it is the mind that has to be healed. The sickness of the mind is separation, or guilt; the healing of the mind is forgiveness, or joining. The miracle brings that about by shifting the problem back to where it is.
